I was on edge all day. Shea and I thought it best not to interact during class, so I simply locked eyes with him and watched him nod once. The plan was still on. He was going to be on alert at the office building tonight when I went to meet Alan and burst in with the cameras rolling. Heâd be listening in on the phone so he would know when.
When I arrived back at my office in the Ivory Tower, Alan was lurking in the hallway as if waiting for me to return. âHave a good class?â he schmoozed in his greasy, disingenuous voice.
âI did.â I didnât even make eye contact with him, just turned my key in its lockâonly to find the door was already unlocked.
âOh, sorry about that; I forgot to lock it back.â Alan shrugged. âI have a master, you know. I took the liberty of making sure there wasnât anything incriminating on your computer, you know, since we have your tenure committee meeting tomorrow.â
I barely restrained myself from throwing some choice words in his direction, choosing instead to simply nod as I slipped inside. When I went to shut the door, Alan put his hand between the door and the frame, preventing me.
Though, the thought of slamming his hand in my door and pretending it was an accident did cross my mind. So damn temptingâ¦
âEverything good for tonight?â His evil eyes showed the hollow passage to the dark abyss where his soul should have been. His lips twisted up into a crooked grin.
I nodded again, conserving my words. I was so fucking ready to catch this asshole and bring his treatment of me to light. How many other women in the department had he done this to through the years? He had been the departmental chair for three years, but heâd been heading up tenure committees for almost a decade.
I couldnât remember anyone being denied tenure since Iâd been here, and I recalled at least eight or nine colleagues up for itâfive of them, if my memory served, were female, including Ana, whoâd snarled when she saw me talking to Alan in the hallway yesterday. What if he had blackmailed all of them too?
âIâll see you then,â Alan promised, a metallic laugh spilling out of his thin lips. My skin crawled like Iâd been tossed into a pit with thousands of bugs, worms, and millipedes. Tonight when I got home from this ordeal, I would have to scrub his slimy filth out of every pore in my body.
My plan was to work late, grading papersâthe second draft of the second essay was due todayâthen grab a bite to eat before heading over to the address Alan had given me. I wished I was going to see Shea again before this all went down. He had such a calming effect on meâor maybe the orgasms he gave me relaxed me.
I didnât know what would happen when the semester was over, but I hoped we would stillâ¦hang out.
